10 Dental Tips for Maintaining Your Oral Health

Having healthy teeth and gums helps you enjoy your food and drinks. The health of the teeth and mouth can be underestimated at times but only when we have a tooth ache or gum problems, we regret the times we could have taken care of our oral hygiene properly.

You can keep your teeth healthy for a lifetime if you take the right steps every day to take care of them and prevent problem from coming up. This means being mindful of daily habits and having the right set of oral hygiene products.

But ‘which ones are effective?’ is the question that comes to your mind when looking at the filled-up aisle in the stores. Some say fluoridated tooth pastes, some say regular tooth powders and it is confusing. Among the various products available, the activated charcoal tooth powders are gaining importance.

Activated charcoal is a fine-grained black powder made from a variety of natural substances, such as coconut shells, olive pits, slowly burned wood, and peat. Gingivitis can lead to pyorrhea, a periodontal severity. Pyorrhoea causes the ligaments and bones that support the teeth become inflamed and infected. It must be treated by a dentist. Apart from that you can also use the tooth powder for pyorrhea to treat it.

Activated charcoal helps treating tooth decay and gum disease in their early stages. Activated charcoal scrubs off the plaque and this is due to the abrasive property of the substance. Brushing your teeth with activated charcoal powder for less than two minutes would be enough to remove the plaque layer.

Here are some tips for oral hygiene and to prevent oral problems,

1. Brush twice a day

Brushing in the morning after waking up is not enough. It is essential to brush after every meal, but it is hard, you can’t brush in the middle of the day while in office, can you? But the least you could do is brush before you go to bed. This way the food or anything that’s stuck in the teeth can be removed. It is this stuck food that attracts bacteria and microbes while you’re asleep. They not only attack the food, but also the weaken the gum. Hence, it is safe to brush before bed too.

2. Brush the tongue (too)

Plaque can also build up on the tongue. Not only can this lead to bad mouth odour, but it can lead to other oral health problems like mentioned above.

3. Flossing

Flossing can help to stimulate the gums, reduce plaque, and help lower inflammations in the gums. Flossing once a day could prove helpful.

4. Limit soft drinks and fruit juices

The acids in the drinks can soften tooth material and dissolve the minerals in tooth enamel, causing holes or cavities. In severe cases, teeth may be ‘eaten’ right down to the gum.

5. Limit sugar in the diet

Bacteria in dental plaque change sugars into acids, so limiting the sugar is good for overall health.

6. Include fruits and vegetables in the diet

Eating fresh, crunchy produce not only contains more healthy fibre, but it’s also the best choice for the teeth. Cutting down meat and adding more fresh fruits and vegetables can help with oral health.

7. Avoid tobacco and its products

Smoking or chewing tobacco have proved to cause oral cancer and dentists have stressed more than enough to people to quit them. Tobacco intake increases the plaque level in the teeth and weakens it.

8. Drink more water

Water can help wash out some of the negative effects of sticky and acidic foods and beverages keeping the mouth clean.

9. Use a good oral hygiene product (regularly)

Regular use of a good tooth paste or tooth powder can help keeping the mouth clean and prevent oral diseases. Activated charcoal tooth powder is very effective in this regard.

10. Visit the Dentist at least twice a year

At minimum, you should see the dentist for cleanings and check-ups twice a year. Not only can the dentist’s check for cavities and other problems, they will also be able to spot potential issues and offer treatment solutions.
